The origins of Pampepato are very ancient: it is narrated that it arrived in this area as far back as 1500, from the distant eastern lands, where all spices and aromas come from, that have always been used in the “pampepato ternano” traditional recipe. Upon arrival, the "italic" fantasy was not long to combine these oriental ingredients with the products of local tradition, like the cooked must, the ancient "sapa" of Etruscan and Roman origin. In his book "Umbria a tavola" (edited by Guerra, Perugia), Remo Coppini describes the most ancient recipe of pampepato, dating back to 1851. This text reminds us also of the peasant origin of this sweetcake and the fact that it was to be found only at festivities because, simple folk used a great part of their own savings for its preparation.

Pampepato is a particular cake and in some ways unique. Unique for its sweet, aromatic, and at the same time, spicy and bitter taste. Unique for the way it is made, using an ancient recipe with many different ingredients. This typical product of the local confectioneries is produced in the areas around the towns of: Acquasparta, Arrone, Avigliano U., Ferentillo, Massa Martana, Montecastrilli, Montefranco, Narni, Polino, Sangemini, Stroncone and Terni. It is particularly loved and consumed by the people of Terni throughout the long period of the winter festivities, from the day of The Immaculate Conception to the 14th February, day of the Patron Saint Valentine

Pampepato is considered part of the history of Terni, a town rich in events, historical figures and atmosphere, that represent the patrimony of which the people of Terni are proud. Terni is the city of Tacitus, the great Roman historian, of the Marmore Waterfall, the highest in Europe and of Saint Valentine, the patron saint of the sweethearts all over the world.
Terni has also a patrimony of beautiful monumental and natural sights, a town of simple and genuine traditions, that not only survive, but always can regenerate itself to represent the cultural identity of its people, in every moment and in every age.
